How to Choose a Business Checking Account
There are several factors one should consider in choosing a business checking account. As a business owner myself I have found the following factors to be particularly important:
- No Fees: Having paid significant fees from a business checking account at a large traditional bank, I can tell you personally that it drains your bank account unnecessarily. All of the checking accounts listed above either have no fees at all or low thresholds to required to waive monthly fees.
- Mobile App: A lot of banking today is done either on a smartphone or tablet. With the remainder primarily done on a laptop or desktop. For this reason, it's critical that the bank offer a well functioning online experience. Again, I've had experience with large banks who seem to be decades behind in technology. The banks listed on this page all have highly rated apps. That should be an important consideration in choosing a business checking account.
- Transfers: As a small business owner, I regularly transfer money to or from my personal account. It's important to be able to connect my my personal account to my business account. This of course is easy if both accounts are at the same financial institution. Even if they are not, this transfer process should be seamless.
- Interest Rates: Frankly, this is not the most important factor for me personally. I do not keep a lot of cash inside my business checking account. If you do, however, earning some interest should be an important consideration
- FDIC Insurance: Some of the companies listed on this page are not technically banks. They are technology companies that partner with banks for the deposit Account. What matters of course is that your funds are FDIC insured. All of the companies on this page are either FDIC insured banks or partner with FDIC insured banks.
- Transaction Processing: If your business has a high volume of transactions and credit card processing, it's important to find the lowest fees possible. In the case of transactions, you want to find banks that don't charge transaction fees. For credit card processing, it may or may not be ideal to use your bank. In many cases, you might want to use a separate credit card processor who charges lower fees.
Methodology
We examined 20 different banks and technology companies that offer business checking accounts. We focused primarily on fees and features. Those banks that either charge no fees at all or had fees that were easy to waive received high marks. In addition, we looked for features that most small businesses would want, including a solid mobile app experience and integrations with other technology platforms.
Lastly, we did consider interest rates and rewards. Some of the banks on this list offer either or both. This was not however, the primary consideration in our evaluation. Many businesses do not hold large amounts of cash in a checking account, and those who want to earn yield may be better served with a business savings account.
FAQs

There really is no one answer to that question. It's going to depend on the specific business and its requirements. Of those in our list. We do think BlueVine stands out for both its low fees, rich features and high interest rate on deposit accounts.
Do I need an EIN or tax identification number to open up a business checking account?
In many cases you do not. Sole proprietors who operate under their own name with their own social security number can open a business checking account at most banks.
Are business bank accounts FDIC insured?
Yes. Just like personal bank accounts, business bank accounts do receive FDIC insurance protection up to $250,000
