15 Popular Credit Cards with Free Travel Insurance Benefits

Travel cards can provide thousands of dollars in rewards and other benefits for frequent travelers. But while most consumers focus on the most obvious travel benefits, like sign-up bonuses and travel rewards, there are plenty of other benefits that get a lot less attention – like travel insurance. But the right combination of travel insurance provisions can add hundreds of dollars in annual benefits to an otherwise good credit card.

Below is our list of the best credit cards for travel insurance for both personal and business use.

The Most Common Travel Insurance Benefits

There are several different types of travel insurance benefits, some unique to individual credit card providers.

Below are the four most common travel insurance benefits:

Trip cancellation/interruption Insurance. Reimburses you for the cost of a trip that’s canceled due to sickness, severe weather, or other covered hazards. Pays up to a certain maximum amount per person and per trip for covered costs.

Auto rental collision damage waiver. When you rent a car, your regular car insurance acts as the primary insurance carrier. But if you charge the rental to a credit card that offers this coverage, the deductible on your regular policy will be covered. It may also cover other hazards not included in your regular policy.

Trip delay reimbursement. Provides reimbursement up to a certain amount for expenses such as meals and lodging that result from a delayed trip.

Baggage insurance. You can be reimbursed up to a certain amount per passenger if you or an immediate family member’s luggage (checked or carry-on) is either damaged or lost by the airline.

If you are relying on any of these coverages, be sure to check the fine print in your credit card agreement and your benefits guide. Coverage will be limited to specific events and dollar amounts determined by the credit card issuer.

How Does Credit Card Travel Insurance Work?

Travel insurance provided by credit cards is usually simple and user-friendly. You use your credit card to pay for the trip, and the insurance coverage is automatic.

But there can be complications. For example, while one airline may provide insurance coverage simply for charging airfare on your credit card, others may require purchasing your hotel and other travel expenses as well. Be on the safe side and chat with your credit card company before any trip. Not only do insurance provisions vary from one company to the next, but they can also change with the same company from time to time.

Are family members traveling with you also covered? The answer to this question is generally yes, but you’ll need to verify that with your credit card company. Some companies may limit coverage to a main traveler and a companion, while others will extend coverage to family members.

How do you file a claim? What do you need to file a claim? This varies by credit card company and their insurance providers.

But as a matter of general procedure, follow these steps:

  • Contact the credit card company just before your trip, to verify coverage and any specific requirements and limitations.
  • Make sure spending on your trip is within the limits of your insurance coverage. Renting a $100,000 luxury sports car probably won’t be covered in an auto rental collision damage waiver.
  • Save all receipts from your trip. The insurance carrier will likely require you to submit them as evidence for reimbursement.
  • Initiate a claim as soon as possible. Not only will there be a time limit on claims, but the sooner you file the more quickly your claim will be processed.

If you have any doubts about the process, be sure to contact your credit card carrier before booking your trip.

Is Credit Card Travel Insurance Enough or Should You Purchase Additional Insurance?

Credit card travel insurance is generally sufficient to cover normal travel under ordinary circumstances. But if your trip involves anything that might be extraordinary, purchasing additional coverage is well-advised.

For example, trip cancellation insurance may be limited to no more than four members of your party. But if there are six people in your party, you may need additional coverage. The policy may also be limited to a specific family composition, such as two adults and two children. If your party is four adults, it’s possible only two will be covered.

Another example is the auto rental collision damage waiver. There may be specific types of vehicles excluded under the policy. That can include vehicles valued above a certain dollar threshold, or certain types of vehicles, like off-road vehicles or sports cars. If the car you’re renting exceeds the coverage limits, you’ll need to purchase additional coverage.

Be sure to read the fine print in your credit card agreement when you first sign up for a card. But it’s also worth reviewing before any trip where insurance coverage offered may be needed.

FAQs

Are you still covered if you book your trip with credit card points?

Generally, yes. But if you’re using points to pay for much or all of a trip, be sure to contact the credit card company to see if there are any limitations on insurance coverage when redeeming rewards.

Is credit card travel insurance worth it?

Absolutely! It’s a benefit provided by the credit card issuer that doesn’t require any additional fees. And though it may not offer benefits under all circumstances, you will be covered in ordinary situations.

What is not covered by credit card travel insurance?

In short, any situation that is not specifically included in a travel insurance policy, or that exceeds the specified limits of the coverage.

One common exclusion many travelers are not aware of is medical insurance for foreign travel. Most US-based health insurance companies won’t cover treatment outside the US. You’ll need to have a separate policy to cover health emergencies in a foreign country. Those will typically need to be purchased through a third party, like Allianz or Travelex.

Summary

Travel insurance is an excellent benefit to have with credit cards. But be sure you understand the limits of each type of coverage. If your situation falls outside the definition of covered events, you may not qualify for benefits and need additional coverage.
