Our Take

How Does the Chase Freedom Student card Compare?

The Chase Freedom® Student credit card stacks up well against other student credit cards. The unlimited access to credit score information can help students see how their choices affect their credit. The cash back rewards are a straightforward 1% across the board, so no need to keep track of categories or other limitations. You may also be eligible for a credit limit increase after making five on-time monthly payments within 10 months from account opening.

Who Is the Chase Freedom Student card Best For?

The Chase Freedom Student card is best for students who want a starter credit card that offers a bonus, cash back, and credit score monitoring for no annual fee.

Who Would Do Better With a Different Card?

Students who travel internationally can avoid foreign transaction fees by choosing the Deserve EDU Mastercard for Students. There’s no signup bonus, but it also offers 1% cash back on all purchases and there’s no annual fee. If you’re an international student, you don’t need a social security number to apply.

Students can earn slightly more cash back with the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One. If you make payments on time, you’ll earn 1.25% cash back on purchases. You can also earn 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, so students who travel frequently might do better with this card.

What Credit Score is Required to Get the Chase Freedom Student card

Based on data we’ve collected from public forums, a credit score of 690 or higher is ideal. We have seen an approval with a score as low as 679, but keep in mind that credit card issuers consider more than just your credit score when evaluating a credit card application. Also, because this is a student credit card, approvals with lower or limited credit may be possible.
